I started by planning it for an Aggie home game so many of her family and friends (and a couple of my friends) could be there without her being suspicious (cause you know how us Aggies love our Aggie football).
We are both big on Aggie traditions so I knew I wanted to do it at the Century Tree on A&M’s campus. This is a large oak tree and is the oldest tree on campus (over 100 years old). The tradition goes that you are only supposed to walk under it with the person you are going to spend the next 100 years with (ideally the love of your life, lol). Aggies have been walking under the Century Tree to propose marriage to the love of their life for many year and I knew that she would like appreciate me proposing in this way.
I then got her direct family and her friends that were going to be in town involved. We concocted a scheme to get her there without making her suspicious by creating a ‘Campus Tour for everyone that was coming back to Aggieland for the game’. This was made even better and easier to believe when I got her Dad and Former Fightin’ Texas Aggie Yell Leader, Terry Hlavinka, involved to give us the “tour” since of course as a Former Yell Leader ‘he knows everything there is to know about A&M’. The plan was to take the tour around to the Century Tree where I would somehow get her to walk under it with me and propose then and there.
It went off without a hitch. At 2:00 on Saturday October 3rd she and I, her parents, her 3 siblings, and 13 of our closest friends started a “tour” of A&M’s campus that ended at the Century Tree with the love of my life and soulmate saying that she would be my wife. J
